«We are where you are» : derrière ce curieux titre-manifeste de Britta Vossmerbäumer se rejoignent deux types de projets, liés par un même fil théorique. Il y a, tout d’abord, une suite de peintures, qui selon les mots de l’artiste «fonctionnent comme des étalages de vitrine». Agglomérats d’images extirpées de magazines, vestiges de souvenirs de vacances et autres rémanentes sentimentales, ces peintures s’affichent comme des mémentos un peu saturés, un peu kitsch et complètement épileptiques, à la façon d’un film de Chris Marker.
Et
pour accompagner ces peintures, Vossmerbäumer met en place une étrange
expérience participative, qui prend la forme d’un jeu de cartes postales. La
peintre a, en effet, fait imprimer une série de petites aquarelles, chacune
d’entre elles représentant un popcorn aussi solitaire que souverain. Les différentes
cartes ont ensuite été placées dans des cafés, bars et salles de spectacle
bruxelloises, aux endroits traditionnellement réservés aux prospectus. Seules
indications de leurs destinées artistiques, quelques informations au verso :

Laissées
à leurs tristes sorts, les cartes postales subiront l’inévitable guerre
des flyers.
Qu’adviendra-t-il de ces éditions d’art (numérotées à la main) au cours des
prochaines semaines ? Seront-elles remarquées, manipulées, renvoyées à la
galerie, leur milieu dédicacé ? Vossmerbäumer s’apprête à documenter, le temps
de l’exposition, leurs survies respectives au sein de cette bataille
silencieuse (terrible pour une œuvre d’art), où chaque tract, chaque image,
cherche à supplanter - visuellement comme territorialement - ses voisins.

«We are where you are» : behind this curious title-manifesto of Britta Vossmerbäumer, are joined two types of projects, linked by a common theoretical thread. Agglomerates of images extirpated from magazine, vestiges of holiday memories and other emotional persistence’s, these paintings appear as reminders a little saturated, a bit kitsch and completely epileptic, in the manner of a film of Chris Marker.
To
accompany these
paintings, Vossmerbäumer implements
a strange participatory experience,
which takes the form of a set of postcards. The painter,
in fact, printed a series of small
watercolors, each representing a popcorn as
lonely as sovereign. Different
cards were then placed in cafes, bars and theaters
in Brussels in locations traditionally reserved to prospectus. As only indications of their
artistic destiny, some information
on the back:

Left
to their
sad fates, postcards will suffer
the inevitable war of flyers. What will happen
to these art editions (hand numbered) in the coming weeks? Will they be noticed,
handled, returned to the gallery, their
dedicated environment? Vossmerbäumer is prepared to document the time of
the exhibition, their survival
in this silent battle
(terrible for an art work), where
each leaflet, each image seeks to supplant -
visually as territorially
– its neighbors.
